How to Choose an Airsoft Gun Scope

Airsoft is a sport similar to paintball where players take part in detailed military simulations, reenactments and games using realistically designed guns which shoot soft pellets. The difference between airsoft and paintball is that paintball guns are powered most often by a compressed tank of gas and are thought to be more accurate over longer distances. Plus, paintball guns shoot paint spheres while airsoft guns shoot pellets. Both paintballs and pellets have the potential for causing serious injury if proper safety gear is not worn at all times on the field. If you'll be participating in a simulation where you will be a sniper, you will definitely need an airsoft gun scope. Even if you won't be sniping, a scope can be handy thing to have.

There are basically three different kinds of scopes you can choose from. The first is called the telescopic scope. With a telescopic scope, you get magnified vision like you would from a telescope. This type of scope is ideal for many purposes including sniping. These scopes are available in many different sizes. The most popular and widely used is the 3-9x40 size. This means that you can choose magnification between three and nine times, and the lens is 40mm. Most often your scope will feature standard crosshairs which are more for looks than function.

Then there is the red dot type of scope. This type of scope does not offer magnification like the telescopic type does. However it can be ideal for close range action and can work just as well for pistols as it can for rifles. Basically with the red dot scope, you will see a red dot on your target which helps you know when to fire. No one else can see the dot but you, which allows you to precisely hit your target without error. For this type of scope, a 40mm size is ideal but the range can be anywhere from 20mm to 40mm.

The laser scope is the third type of airsoft gun scope from which you can choose. This type is very much like the red dot scope. The difference is that the laser scope projects the dot onto the target and everyone can see it. Even though the dot is most visible in dimmer light, you can use these in daylight as well. Some players don't like this type of scope because it alerts the enemy to your presence, while others like it because it spooks the enemy. Whether or not you should choose a telescopic, red dot or laser scope for your airsoft gun depends on your individual playing style and what your personal preferences are.
