How to Prevent Injury from Airsoft Gun Pellets

Airsoft is an exciting sport that many teens and adults enjoy. In the sport of airsoft, opposing teams take part in detailed military simulations. The game is very similar to that of paintball. The only real difference is that paintball uses paint filled capsules that burst on impact and airsoft uses plastic pellets. As you can imagine, plastic pellets can be quite painful when they hit the skin at high velocity. Depending on the range, an airsoft pellet can sting, bruise or even break the skin. While injury from airsoft gun pellets is not usually life threatening, it can be very serious especially if the injury is to the eye.

Airsoft pellets can seriously injure the eye and even cause permanent blindness. This is why the most important piece of safety equipment you can own is eye protection. The best idea is to buy a helmet with eye protection attached as the temple area of the head is a tender spot that can also suffer serious injury if hit. Many people also use throat and chest protectors as well to avoid injury in these sensitive areas. For airsoft as well as paintball, it's important to wear long sleeved clothing and long pants to protect your skin from lacerations and bruising.

Many parents of kids interested in airsoft think that the sport is violent and dangerous. The truth is that if airsoft is played with respect and all safety rules and regulations are followed, the sport is quite safe. Because the games are military style simulations, teamwork and critical decision making skills are necessary. This sport can potentially raise one's self esteem and leadership skills. The most important thing is the attitude of the individual playing the sport, not the sport itself. Thousands of people enjoy airsoft all the time without harm or injury, because they follow the rules.

The best way to avoid injury from airsoft gun pellets is to wear protective gear and treat your gun as if it is a real gun that fires bullets. Never point it unless you're prepared to fire it. Always transport it in a gun case. Make sure you know the rules of the field at which you're playing, and follow them. Respect not only your gun but the people around you. By doing so, the sport of airsoft can remain safe and fun for all involved.
